A couple of weeks ago, we ran a piece about the
tribute Blizzard had planned to honor the late comedian Robin Williams. Well,
it now looks like the rumors surrounding the said in-game tribute were true, as
the genie NPC created in reference to one of the late actor’s iconic roles, has
been officially uncovered.
The tribute was discovered in the World of Warcraft:
Warlords of Draenor expansion beta, by a player named “Haldhur”.
Apparently, Haldhur came upon a special-looking item within
one of the new areas introduced by the expansion. The location of the item
known as the “Ever-burning Lamp” is on an island near Talador, and once players
interact with it, a genie is summoned.
The genie then says “infinite cosmic power/itty-bitty
living space” in clear reference to one of Robin Williams’ lines from Aladdin. The
lamp isn’t the only tribute-item apparently. Next to it, there’s a broken
egg-shell, which could be a reference to Mork and Mindy, as well as a bunch of
other, smaller bits of paraphernalia possibly referring to some of the other
roles the actor had had over his career.
Apparently, there are two more character models
included in the expansion which could also end up as Robin Williams-inspired
NPCs, but the presence of these characters – unlike that of the genie – has not
been confirmed yet. That of course does not mean they aren’t in fact in the
game already.
There’s also been another discovery made within the
game data, that of the title “Comedian” which will probably be used in
association with these new characters. Once the WOW: Warlords of Draenor
expansion pack is released on November 13, we’re quite certain all the
characters and tribute-elements shall be discovered on short notice by the
community.
